West said they know Bangladesh's interim government is committed to restoring peace and order, ensuring accountability and establishing national unity. He also said that the UK government has full support to achieve these objectives.
In response to a question about BNP acting chairperson Tariq Rahman's return to the country, the British minister said that they did not discuss any single issue. However, as Bangladesh is currently in the transition phase, they want to support the government. He said, "We want to cooperate with the interim government in all their work."
West said, 'We have a very strong and steadfast friendship with the people of Bangladesh. We want to build strong partnerships and build on that important cornerstone of strong relationships; Also want to move towards a democratic future.
From economy and trade to security, migration and climate change, he said, they are doing a lot together and they must continue to work.
After months of turmoil, West said a path to a "peaceful future and accountability" is needed for the people of Bangladesh. "I am here to discuss how the UK can best support the interim government in stabilizing the economy and moving towards a peaceful and democratic future," he said.
Referring to the Rohingya issue, West said they have announced a further £10 million in funding to build proper shelters for refugees and ensure adequate food, medical supplies and education for children.
After the formation of the interim government last August, this is the first time that a senior representative of the UK government visited Bangladesh. He discussed ongoing cooperation on political and economic reforms, security, trade cooperation and UK-Bangladesh migration.
